Cross-Reality Environments

We're currently accepting Work in Progress submissions of 250 words or less for our July-September 2009 issue on Cross-Reality Environments. These will not be peer-reviewed but will be reviewed by the Department Editor, Anthony Joseph, and, if accepted, edited by the staff into a feature for the issue. We are witnessing the dawn of a ubiquitous networked sensor infrastructure, leveraged by the increasingly low cost of microelectronics, sensors, and wireless technologies. As these now independent application-silo systems begin to converge through common standards, the world becomes covered by a seamless electronic "nervous system," that extends across things, places, and people. One of the biggest challenges facing researchers is how to appropriately interface humans with this wealth of real-time information. Immediate applications of such an augmented awareness are readily evident in areas like supply chain and logistics management, military C&C, urban optimization (e.g., transportation and energy), factory & plant operation, etc. Taking a broad perspective, however, this transition is profound — one's interface into this environment can be envisioned as an extension of human perception, augmenting our five senses well beyond the canonical "here and now" and redefining the meaning of presence.

Online shared virtual worlds, which have had enormous growth and exposure in recent years, may present one way to connect people to such information. Sensed phenomena and features, for example, can manifest as metaphoric constructs and animations shared across a group of users who can easily shift the scale, location, modality, and granularity of represented data. Similarly, a user in virtual space can "appear" through devices and actuators in the real world. We term the translation of sensed phenomena into the virtual space and the manifestation of virtual phenomena into the real world "Cross Reality," where sensor/actuator networks tunnel information across the real/virtual divide. Beyond Cross Reality is "Scalable Virtuality," where the manifestation of virtual phenomena in the real world becomes a function of available and appropriate information portals, and the representation of real-world data in virtual space is dependent on dynamic privacy settings and local context. One may interpret immersive virtual worlds as a "front panel" of Pervasive Computing, where information from the real world is extrapolated, processed, and represented before being projected back down into reality through appropriate incarnations.

Topics

Example topics for this special issue include but are not limited to the following:

 

browsing the real world through virtual environments;

using sensor/actuator nets for communicating between virtual and real;

scalable virtuality environments that seamlessly cross between virtual immersion and background interaction;

networking standards to enable communication between virtual and real;

standards that enable seamless transitions between various virtual environments and reality;

interface devices to enable coordinated interaction with real and virtual phenomena;

visualization (or "incarnation") techniques for manifesting real-virtual or virtual-real;

cross-reality applications; and

hardware and/or software systems to enable Cross-Reality environments and applications.

Submissions should be 4,000 to 6,000 words long and should follow the magazine's guidelines on style and presentation. All submissions will be peer-reviewed in accordance with normal practice for scientific publications. Submissions should be received by  30 January 2009 to receive full consideration.

In addition to full-length submissions, we also invite work-in-progress submissions of 250 words or less (submit to pervasive@computer.org) These will not be peer-reviewed but will be reviewed by the Department Editor, Anthony Joseph, and, if accepted, edited by the staff into a feature for the issue. Number two.  A high quality screen reader software tool that reads the school assignment texts allowed to me.

 

My original statement of expectation for the accommodations I believe appropriate at this U reads thusly: I need completed examples of other students negotiations (which or non descript to specific individual students) and accommodations for adhd who have successfully completed degree programs with this school (only descriptions of what accommodations were available and granted to the students were specifically led to their successful and healthy life in the workplace and social settings after their degree was completed Italics despite the fact and conditions of their mental or physical health issues).  As stated on the students� self disclosure statement.  What accommodations do you feel up would be appropriate at International U?  My answer reads: I need assistance for manifesting my educations ability to prepare me for further education two successful application after the completion of a doctorate of education in educational Computer Technology use and deployment where administration and deployment of combination of curriculums from many disciplines of major study and professional work fields where contextual awareness directly advances a specific and right application of Buddhist principles and remnants of cultures that highly integrate harmless habitat preservation for all life.  This is needed to be massively sustainable and progressive as a new educational curriculum administration for what I know as cybernetics or interdisciplinary communications between major school and professional the swarms of Buddhism sociology and ecology.

 

The accommodations I expect must include some ability to review and modify the accommodations which are made available to me by having the school in any change in the conditions of my mental health or the Health Care provider for my conditions changes or my employment needs change which will affect my capacity to comprehensively complete the assignments; such as any need to change my medication (they took almost a full year to even begin a medication that would actually gave me some relief from my symptoms �), or financial situation which prohibits my purchasing my medication, I ask this because as you can see from the low quality of service which I am provided at the local mental health center where I am being cared for, the staff essentially refused to provide a worthwhile statement of our past and present diagnosis; much less what I actually needed which was recommendations for the type of, they shun which would be best suited for me.  This is because they don�t know anything about me whatsoever because it�s a clinic where I can all we see on a real Dr. Once every three months or longer!  So until I can get some stable income and see a private Dr. With better quality of service, then I obviously do not even have correct Health Care which and where by my accommodations request can be correct and purse to police it a ball with my conditions as I complete the degree program and perhaps transfer to a bachelor�s of science degree.

 

Also I believe the screen reader software could really be helpful on the days where I have to get a lot of reading done and my brain will let me concentrate enough to type of line of text while any kind of distracting thing is occurring� (these things still happen, even with the medication), also the screen reader software could provide some compensation for the fact that in my present degree program has absolutely zero lectures and negligible lifelike communication with the actual teachers�  I hope to read as many peer reviewed basis is and dissertations as possible from the U library databases(most of those or tremendously long!) Such that I can properly can sitter graduate students work as fields of inter disciplinary or multidisciplinary communications emerge and are developed.

So this is the kind of friend you have, they move from homeless shelter to homeless shelter; sometimes forcing people to use drugs with him a in a destructive and youthful misadventure with whatever partner will take to their companionship. Further alienating one young woman or young man which they have found out you had wealth from parents at some point or another perhaps even part of a college education. Then luering you back into a world of drugs or whatever addiction or mental condition (friendship?) which brought you down in the first place..... and reviewing constantly a list of people from his former drug addictions which he can find places to stay for a night or a drug connection for the both of them to use just one last time...... or a small deal to support the dealers habits.... maybe he convinces her to sleep with the dealer, I don't know how or what... and surely not why. But he will lie to you constantly to get what he wants... and tell you oh happy day how thankfull you are the only friend in the world he has.... but really he or she is just waiting for the next tiny score.... "who is it hurting,? he/she thinks..... (What do you think, maybe ask their parole/probation officer.... the local office manager of the apartment complex that needs to make a better real estate deal on the 5 or 6 houses they will sell this next year because the adoptive fathers mortgage was forclosed when he spent the payment money on heroin slipped into his nightly drink by the adopted stepdaughter).... Your LandLord.     Which also owns the local radio station that gives you youngish school and entry level working people the news you can use to navigate through the difficult times of your life each day....       (to be continued)
